Press Release 02/2025
Berlin, March 2025 – How do you find perfect roommates? For the Berlin flatshare startup heyroom, the answer has recently been: through the people you already know – friends, girlfriends and former roommates. About a month ago, heyroom launched a new feature that brings people looking for shared flats together in a completely new way: through community-based matching.
The idea behind it: Real connections create trust. Anyone who gets involved in a new shared flat wants to find more than just a free room – especially people with whom it really fits. The new feature therefore uses existing contacts to make profiles more credible and improve matching.
Here’s how it works:
- Instant Profile Verification – Users simply invite three friends or former roommates to verify their profile.
- This creates a digital network of trust – and matching becomes more personal, secure and human.
The feedback after one month is clear:
The new function is well received. The conversion rate is strong: active users send more than two invitations on average. This shows that trust and real relationships count – also (and especially) when living in a shared flat.
Johannes Bader, Founder & CEO of heyroom:
“What makes good roommates? In any case, not only cleaning schedules and a similar taste in music – but real vibes. We believe that community is built through trust. That’s why we’re bringing this into the app. And yes, even with a few good gifs.”
Community matching is part of heyroom’s larger mission:
Housing should not only be affordable, but also social and lively.

More about heyroom
While co-living concepts often sell overpriced micro-apartments in an anonymous hotel atmosphere, heyroom focuses on real community and fair rents – for a co-living experience that feels like home.
The image of a shared flat as a chaotic interim solution has had its day. heyroom thinks of shared flats as they really are: as places where you support each other and someone asks how your day was. Shared flats as a conscious decision for community – and as an answer to the challenges of our time.
Shared flats are not only practical, they stand for togetherness that counteracts isolation and conserves resources. They are places where friendships are formed that have an impact far beyond the shared flat and form the foundation for vibrant communities and social cohesion.
But while heyroom celebrates the advantages of shared flats, they are politically treated like temporary communities of convenience – not like what they have long been for many: modern families of choice. heyroom therefore sees itself not only as a platform for finding shared flats, but also as a mouthpiece for communal and sustainable living.
